So I’ve always been one to challenge myself with learning something new. Last year I started taking guitar lessons, and I did NOT realize how challenging it was to learn! I did come to the realization that doing things like that and pushing my brain to learn actually makes me a lot sharper in everything that I do in my life.
That’s why I love to read, because it keeps my mind working, so it doesn’t get lazy. But the thing that stands out pretty well with learning something that you’ve never done before is how the brain really starts to change and adapt to the challenge.
I never played an instrument, or knew anything about music. So learning the guitar was like a foreign language to me. As we get older I think we tend to allow our brains to get lazy. We fall into our regular patterns of daily living, never stretching ourselves to learn something new.
It’s funny how I’m quick to get frustrated learning something new. I think as a human being that’s our first reaction. We want everything just to be easy, but the FUN is in the challenge. I never thought that the guitar would push me outside my comfort zone as much as it has.
Now that I’ve been playing the acoustic guitar for over a year, I decide to learn something new… golf! This is totally outside of my zone. I was never a sports guy, but I love the challenge… and it’s weird but I always loved the way it felt to walk on that fake artificial grass stuff. Call me crazy, but something about it I like.
